The pony express
A mail service in the early 1860's, where Riders changed horses at way stations that were ten to fifteen miles apart. Home stations where both riders and horses changed were about seventy-five to a hundred miles apart. The route started in St. Joseph, Missouri, followed the Oregon Trail along the Platte River though Nebraska, continued through Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada, ending in Sacramento, California. A letter sent from St.Joseph's would arrive Sacramento ten days later, having been carried by 22 riders and 120 horses.
